We break the surface of the soil around the base and cover it with a nourishing mixture of manure, mulched leaves, small sticks and grass. This will provide a warm composting doughnut which will release nutrients in the soil, gradually enriching the ground near the roots so when spring will finally arrive there will be food for their awakening.
